Sigil Typeface
These are Sigils, Urbit’s generative user avatar system. There are 4.2 billion unique IDs, each with a 2x2 tile grid, to service Urbit’s OS. The artistic and computational process behind the scenes is fascinating, and I would recommend giving it a read.
Simply put, I’m a big fan of Urbit’s design philosophy, which unites minimalist geometry, art, and retrofuturism on top of first-principle computing. I decided to try my hand at a capital typeface inspired by similar principles.
Each letter is derived from one of these six shape components: circle, semi-square, quarter, square, leaf, point, and line. Like Sigil planet, star, and galaxy tokens, each letter uses between 1 and 4 core components. Designed on Figma, below is my final product:
